31 Mar How do you find your Power during times of great Uncertainty?
There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and most of us are feeling a great sense of uncertainty and trepidation. So, my question is: Is there an antidote to this Anxiety? And how do you find your power during times of great Uncertainty?
Anxiety and Uncertainty
To be sure, not all kinds Uncertainty are troubling. For example, Spontaneity: stepping into the unknown and trying something new, can bring with it pleasant surprises, and beautiful, life enriching experiences. However, long-term fear and uncertainty can have serious consequences for your mental and emotional health.
In general, what makes Anxiety so debilitating is the feeling of being powerless, an overwhelming sense that you’re not safe and you don’t have control over the perceived threat to your well-being. The good news is that there’s something you can do about it.
The Antidote to Anxiety
If feeling Powerless leads to Anxiety, then the antidote to Anxiety has to be, to get your power back. This will require Action. The antidote to Anxiety is in *Taking Action*.
Here are some actions you can take to mitigate the feelings of Powerlessness and Anxiety during a time of uncertainty:
- Focus on the things you can Control: Conserve your energy and build a stronger Mindset by focusing on the things you can control. There’s no point dwelling on the things you can’t control. This doesn’t mean you should put your head in the sand. Be aware of what’s taking place, but put your attention on what you can change, strengthen and improve for the better. This will go far in giving you the sense that you have a say in what’s unfolding in your life. In turn, this will create a healthier Mindset, which will allow you to make better decisions. I recommend that you read this post: Do you Know the Key Component for taking Action?
- Create Order out of Chaos: At a time like this, you need structure! Your daily routines have been upended and your life has become chaotic. To balance this, create a new operational structure within which you conduct your daily life. To do so, establish what has to get done and by when. Be aware that your priorities may have changed. Eliminate all unnecessary activities, deal only with the things that absolutely have to get done. Be flexible in your thinking. Be open to doing things in new ways. Ask for help.
- Knowledge is power: Invest time in acquiring reliable information with which you can make informed decisions. Be sure to avoid marinading yourself in hours of negative newscasts. Get a quick update, then turn the news source off. Be very attentive to the quality of information you’re feeding your brain.
- Take Care of Yourself: Again, knowledge is power. Invest time in researching the kinds of things that will boost your immune system, support your mental health and keep you physically healthy and strong. There are very reliable sources of information online if you know where to look. Some excellent resources are: Dr. Josh Axe and Dr. Mark Hyman. Work with a reputable Naturopath, Doctor or Health Care Practitioner who can guide you through this time. One of the most important things you can do during a time of uncertainty is to create a self-care structure such as a Daily Practice. Ideally, it will be one that connects you to something greater than yourself, quiets your mind, calms your emotions, reduces stress, replenishes your energy and keeps you centered, grounded and balanced. I have provided you with some links below that can help with this.
- Adjust your Expectations: These are unusual times. You can’t do things as you normally would so, be smart. Use your head, plan, think things through, reduce your work load/do only what is necessary and refrain from investing your emotional energy in things that drain you.
- Build Community: Build a greater sense of Community. Connect with others. Reach out and help others, find opportunities to make new connections, get creative: spot a need and find a way to fill it. Who knows, it could lead to a great new business idea!
- Career Support: If some of the Anxiety you’re experiencing has to do job security, please consider working with a Career Counselor. These 7 steps will go a long way to tipping the balance in your favour and helping you find your power during a time of Uncertainty. Wishing you well. -Kristina Jansz
