21 Aug All it takes is One choice, to break free
One choice. That’s it! One choice that changes up your routine. One choice that takes you in a different direction. One choice that allows you to breathe more freely. All it is takes one choice to break free, get unstuck and moving in the direction of your goal.
When we’re unhappy with the way things are, it can seem like an overwhelming task to change things. The goal can seem so far out of our grasp.
But the good news is that you don’t have to change the whole situation at once. You can start with just one step. And, while that may seem insignificant, tiny shifts can make a huge difference by breaking the cycle you’re in and opening the doors to new possibilities. It gets you unstuck.
With this, you start to feel different. Better. Energy starts to move. And once that happens, the next steps are easier to take.
Benefits
There are many benefits to doing it this way:
- It is Manageable and therefore Sustainable. Making one choice to do something different that points you in the direction you want to go in, is MUCH easier than trying to change the whole thing. As a result, you’re much more likely to sustain that new behaviour. The reason why this is important is because when new behaviour is repeated often enough that it starts to feel normal, long term change becomes possible.
- It gives you time to develop skills and grow. This will boost your self-confidence and make taking the next steps a lot easier: “I can do this!”
- This approach is much less Anxiety provoking because it gives you the time to adjust and get comfortable with the changes. You won’t feel rushed or overwhelmed.
Putting it into Action
Here are some examples for you to consider:
- You want to get fit but the thought of committing to going to the gym 3 x week, is too much? Start by taking your dog for a longer walk. Park the car further away so that you have to walk a greater distance. Take the stairs instead of the elevator when possible. Do exercises while you’re watching tv or listening to a podcast.
- Your negative mindset is sabotaging you? Try this: every time a negative thought comes up, challenge yourself to engage in a positive thought. It can be about the same topic or it can be a positive thought about something completely different. Over time, you can create a brain where your resting mindset is positive. You really can change your brain. If this interests you, look into the work of Dr. Daniel Amen as well as Dr. Rick Hanson.
- Your body is giving you clear information that you need to make better food choices, but the thought of cutting out all your favourite (poor) food choices seems overwhelming? Start by drinking more water every day. Add one healthy food to your daily diet. Try a new international food recipe every week.
- You’re in an unhealthy relationship but finding it hard to leave? Start working on yourself. Make yourself a priority. Do things YOU love. Invest in your personal growth by taking a course. Practice self-care. Create an amazing Daily Practice. Reduce your stress by Learning to Meditate and Quiet your Mind.
- Feeling stuck at a job where there’s no room for advancement? Reach out to a Career Counselor and get a fresh perspective on things. Get creative, I mean get really ‘charged-up creative’ with something you LOVE to get your energy moving. You’ll be so surprised at how this one step changes the bigger picture.
Start with one choice that takes you in the direction of your goal, and sustain that new behaviour. Then watch how things start to open up for you!
Great Resources
Tech Mogul, Steve Jobs made the choice to trust his intuition. In an article about him in Inc. Magazine, Jobs is quoted saying: “You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and has made all the difference in my life.” If you’re interested, you can read more about him and the lessons we can learn from him in the Harvard Business Review article: The Real Leadership Lessons of Steve Jobs.
For those of you who want to take ‘choice’ to a higher plane, you may want to connect with The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle. It is about the power contained in the present moment, that has the ability to shape our lives in the most meaningful ways.
