It’s what you do with Fear that counts

Developing a sense of confidence easily arises from being able to do something well. However, it’s even more important to know how to handle situations that take us out of our comfort zones, because that’s when our fears get triggered. Having fear doesn’t make you a failure. It’s what you do with Fear that counts.

Keep this in mind when you’re considering taking that step out of what you’re familiar with, to reach for your next level of growth. It’s natural to have fears, anxiety and feel uncertain. That’s just part of the journey in getting from where you are, to where you want to be, and everyone experiences this to varying degrees.

But let’s go back to comfort zones for a moment. Comfort zones are just that: comforting. They provide a sense of safety and security. They give us a sense of certainty. We don’t have to be on high alert, living from the Sympathetic Nervous System, in fight or flight mode. We can relax, rest and breathe easily. We know and understand the context in which we are operating, what is expected of us and what we can expect from being there. We’re comfortable with it.

However, as lovely as that sounds and as comforting as it is to stick to what you know, this actually places you in a very precarious position. It gives you a false sense of security, because the truth is, the moment Life throws you something unfamiliar, which it will a some point, you’ll be tossed into a state of chaos. Or, the moment that inner flame in you ignites and you strongly desire to reach for a new level of growth, fears of the unknown will arise.

It’s what you do with Fear that counts

To be clear, feeling confused, overwhelmed, uncertain, lost and powerless doesn’t make you a failure. That’s just part of the human experience. It’s knowing what to do in those moments, that can really help you find your footing.

I think this is one of the main reasons why I love teaching Life Skills. It empowers people, and with that, their confidence for living Life grows exponentially. If I could, I would encourage every person on the planet to regularly step out of their comfort zone and learn new things:

  • Every day, every month, every year, learn new things. Don’t just stick with what you know.
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Remember: Your Hunger for what you want has to be Greater than the fears that hold you back.
  • Stay curious, inquisitive and questioning.
  • Return to being a creative, open thinker. Dare to dream the impossible.
  • Learn to Visualize the outcome you want. Listen to Jim Kwik’s: The Power of the Imagination
  • Challenge yourself to be adaptable, flexible and resilient. Learn to think outside of the box.
  • Learn new skills and learn to apply your existing skills to new areas of application.
  • Start with small steps, with things that take you slightly outside of your comfort zone. Once you’ve built up your confidence with that, take another step, then another one.
