Focus on improving your Delivery

Focus on Improving your Delivery

Your words holds great power. With it, you take your truth out into the world.  It’s how you let people know who you are and what you stand for, how you build and maintain relationships, and how you connect with the world around you. Yet, surprisingly, learning how to speak well is generally not something people think about.

The 4 Agreements

As a starting point, consider the wise words that Don Miguel Ruiz wrote in his masterful book The Four Agreements.

One of the Agreements is: ‘Be Impeccable with your Word’ and it is all about becoming very Mindful when speaking:

  • Pause before speaking
  • Say only what you mean
  • Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or others
  • Speak with Integrity
  • Do no Harm

Focus on Improving your Delivery

When it comes to communicating with another person, it’s so important to understand that how  you deliver the message IS part of the message! It’s not just the words you speak, but HOW you communicate them that is so important. This includes:

  • Tone of voice
  • Facial Expressions
  • Body language
  • Attitude
  • Choice of words
  • Intent
  • Honesty
  • Respect

All of these are communicating the Intention of your message, so being aware of them and making sure they convey what you mean, is key to being understood.

Avoid this Trapdoor

If you have spent much of your life feeling like you don’t have a voice, and then you find your voice, the feeling of power can be quite intoxicating. But it’s exactly at this point that many people fall through a trap door.

If in using your voice, you harm others because now you’re going to ‘tell it like it is’  and you’ve stopped caring how your words impact them, you’re no further ahead.

Why? The aggressive energy you put into your relationships will have consequences. Call it what you like: The Law of Cause and Effect, Karma, ‘What goes around, comes around’, ‘You get what you give’ , it doesn’t matter what you call it, it will come back to you.

When it does, like most people you’ll find yourself wondering why your personal and professional relationships are problematic. You’ll notice that people keep you at arms length and they hesitate being honest and open with you.

Inevitably, you’ll start to feel emotionally disconnected from meaningful connections with others. This is important because the healthy functioning of relationships, businesses and societies as a whole, comes down to the ability to have healthy, meaningful, respectful connections.

So part of speaking well, also includes thinking about the person who is receiving your message and speaking in a way that respects them as the listener. As well, know that you are 100% responsible for delivering the message in the way you would like it received.

Again, it comes down to Delivery.

Key takeaway: Slow the process down, focus on improving your Delivery, use your words to build strong, clear, repectful connections with others.
